Sportfish backs youth in fly fishing scheme

One of the UK’s best-known game and fly-fishing tackle suppliers, Sportfish, has joined forces with The Mayfly Project UK, which helps children in foster care.

Founded in the USA, The Mayfly Project is a national non-profit organisation and its first project at Sportfish Game Fishing Centre marks the launch of the programme internationally.

It will support children and youth in care through the sport of fly fishing and provide opportunities for them to have fun, build self-esteem and develop a meaningful connection with the great outdoors.
The mentoring sessions will run throughout the summer, with the team teaching children how to fly fish with an emphasis on conservation, education and the outdoor experience.

The project also provides mentees with a structured curriculum workbook, opportunities to earn specialised badges for participating and a new fly rod, reel and set up gear so they have the necessary equipment to continue their journey in the sport.
In addition, Sportfish will offer all project participants free fishing on its lakes once a month for a year after project completion plus generous discounts at its store and online.

Susan Skrupa, founder and director of the Mayfly Project UK said; “Fly fishing mentorship is perfect for children and youth in care because it takes the pressure off them to be a certain way or meet an expectation; they are there to learn how to fish and to take a break from their everyday lives.

“We hope that every child we mentor leaves with not only a desire to spend time in nature and continue to develop their fly-fishing skills, but knowing they are not alone in their journey.”
Robin Philpott, CEO of Sportfish, added: “Engaging and inspiring the next generation is a key pillar in our mission and we are delighted to be working with The Mayfly Project UK to deliver such a worthy initiative. To have the opportunity to enhance youngsters’ understanding of the importance of conservation, safeguarding the environment for future generations, alongside learning new skills, and having fun, aligns perfectly with our ethos.
“Partnering with The Mayfly Project UK is a fantastic way to help us give a little back and bring new people, who may not otherwise have the opportunity, to a sport that can enrich lives.”
