Netherlands tackle trade gets kids fishing

Top international brands joined forces in The Netherlands to encourage youngsters to get into carp fishing. Volunteers from sportfishing club De Baroniesche Hengelaars in Breda ran the event with support from Korda, JRC and Ashima, who supplied terminal tackle and Angling Direct, which provided the bait. Around 25 children attended, with the first evening being dedicated to explaining various fishing techniques, how to safely use nets and how to tie a simple carp rig. The second evening saw everyone gathered on a small lake to put their new-found skills into action. They were joined by Marco Kraal, a representative of Sportvisserij Nederland and TV celebrity from VisTV, who presents a Sunday morning fishing show. With heavy rain showers and despite a huge effort, the youngsters were unlucky not to catch a fish but everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experience. André Akkermans, Angling Direct’s European commercial director, told TTW: “Interestingly, most of the kids had never fished before and neither had their parents. As you can imagine, mums and dads stayed as well to learn. This shows that there is a massive interest in the sport. “All in all, it was a lovely event that needs to be repeated. The aim is to make it even simpler next time and try to catch some fish!”
