Pitman Creek Wholesale digs deep for expansion

Work has started on the construction of a giant warehouse with space for further expansion in the future for one of the US’ leading tackle distributors, Pitman Creek Wholesale.

The firm has begun work on a 205,000 sq ft warehouse and has an additional 200,000 sq ft pad earmarked for future development at the site in Stanford, Kentucky.

Company president and CEO James Coffey said: “This expansion brings Pitman Creek full circle. We started with rented space in Stanford in 1993. We are committed to investing in our people, facilities and technology to provide the best customer service in our industry. The footprint of this facility will be one of, if not the largest, distributor facility dedicated to fishing in the US. We will be fully functional in this new warehouse by fall 2021.”

The distribution centre will increase Pitman Creek’s capacity to enable it to continue growing its business, retain its more than 100 current employees and plan for further jobs in the years ahead.

Director of operations Doug McMurry added: “The new facility will allow Pitman Creek to consolidate our current four locations under one roof while incorporating automations that will improve capacity, speed and accuracy. It’s critical to move forward in a competitive marketplace.”

General manager and COO John. D Johnson said: “It’s a good problem to have, we have completely outgrown our current footprints. We knew we could not continue to grow and service our customers with our current real estate. Our growth along with our commitment to superior customer service demanded that we expand and we have been very blessed to start this project.”

The Pitman Creek story began in 1978 when Don and Marella Stephens started the wholesale business in Somerset, Kentucky near the Lake Cumberland tributary where the company gets its name.

Initially it was a custom lure manufacturer but evolved into a tackle distributor. James S Coffey bought it in 1993 and moved the company to Stanford, Kentucky. At that time, it company primarily focused on central Kentucky tackle shops and marinas.

But now, located in Danville, with satellite warehouses in Danville and Stanford, it supplies fishing tackle to retailers located in 49 states and internationally.
